Coffee & Conversation: Dorcas Hoar & the Beverly Witch Trials

· · ·

A talk over coffee on Beverly’s part in the 1692 witchcraft crisis, when five townspeople were accused and many more drawn into the trials. It centres on Dorcas Hoar, the convicted witch sometimes called the “mob boss of Beverly,” and the Reverend John Hale, who took part in the trials and later criticised them, with accounts of accusers, confessions and attempts to fight witchcraft with witchcraft.

For this 3 in 30 program, Historic Beverly moves from the Cabot House collections to Hale Farm and shows three objects: one that has been there for more than 200 years, one filled with feathers and insect wings, and a surprise. The farm was the home of the Reverend John Hale, Beverly’s minister during the 1692 witchcraft trials. RSVP is required, with a suggested $5 donation.

The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in America

· · ·

Historian Ken Turino traces four centuries of Christmas in New England, from its 17th-century ban to the family-centered holiday of today, showing how it turned from raucous public revelry into a domestic celebration and what it may have looked like in Beverly and other North Shore towns. Turino, a curator and public historian, wrote Interpreting Christmas at Museums and Historic Sites (2024) and co-edited Reinventing the Historic House Museum.
