Pro Arte’s winds and brass open the orchestra’s 49th season with a programme spanning four centuries: Stravinsky’s Fanfare for a New Theatre for two trumpets, three of Giovanni Gabrieli’s brass canzonas written for St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Mozart’s Serenade in C minor, K. 388, Stravinsky’s 1923 Octet, and George Enescu’s 1906 Dixtuor for ten winds, which looks back at the Classical serenade.

Kevin Leong conducts Pro Arte and the Masterworks Chorale in Mozart’s Mass No. 15 in C major, K. 317, the Coronation Mass, alongside music by the brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn. The solo quartet is soprano Deborah Selig, mezzo-soprano Roselin Osser, tenor Gregory Zavracky and baritone Will Prapestis. Mozart wrote the Mass in Salzburg in 1779, when Michael Haydn was his colleague at the archbishop’s court.

Four of Pro Arte's brass players give this holiday concert in the orchestra's Salon Series, the chamber strand in which a handful of musicians from its cooperative present music outside the full Ensemble Series. Principal horn Robert Marlatt, principal trumpet Dana Russian, trumpeter Joseph Foley and trombonist Hans Bohn play, in an informal format with time to talk with the musicians and hear about the music.

Conductor emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads a family concert of music and storytelling. Revueltas's Sensemayá depicts an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist subdues a snake; the finale of Brahms's Double Concerto, written to repair his friendship with Joseph Joachim, features young soloists including cellist Sofia Hernandez-Williams; Jonathan Bailey Holland's El Jaleo follows John Singer Sargent's flamenco painting; and Carey Goldberg narrates Ferdinand the Bull to Bizet's Carmen suites.

Pro Arte's wind principals play light-hearted French music of the 20th century in this Salon Series programme: Ibert's Cinq Pièces en Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, Claude Arrieu's Quartet for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon, and Jean Françaix's Quintette No. 1, which adds horn. The players are flutist Ann Bobo, oboist Nancy Dimock, clarinetist Ian Greitzer, bassoonist Ronald Haroutunian and hornist Robert Marlatt.

Music for clarinet and strings in Pro Arte's Salon Series: Haydn's String Quartet in C major, Op. 20, No. 2, one of his “Sun” quartets, and Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, written in 1891, late in his career, for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. Concertmaster Julia Cash, Liana Zaretsky, Jeff Pearson, principal cellist Steven Laven and clarinetist Kai-Yun Lu play.

Mischa Santora, music director of Boston Ballet, conducts Pro Arte's strings in a programme that opens with the Chorale of Ukrainian composer Hanna Havrylets and Howard Frazin's Peace Cantata, a meditation on war. Spring follows in Vivaldi's “La primavera” from The Four Seasons and Piazzolla's “Primavera Porteña” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and the concert closes with the Élégie and Finale of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings.

Edward Elwyn Jones, Harvard's director of choral activities, conducts Beethoven's Missa solemnis in D major, Op. 123, with the Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus and Masterworks Chorale, together some 200 voices, four vocal soloists and Pro Arte. Beethoven began the mass in 1819 for the installation of his pupil and patron Archduke Rudolph as Archbishop of Olmütz and finished it in 1823, three years after the ceremony.

Oboist Jennifer Slowik joins Pro Arte string players, led by concertmaster Julia Cash, for a Salon Series programme of English and Hungarian music: Britten's Phantasy Quartet for oboe and string trio, written in 1932 while he was a student at the Royal College of Music, Elgar's Andante and Allegro, and Dohnányi's Serenade for String Trio in C major, Op. 10, a five-movement work from 1902.

Conner Gray Covington conducts the ballet music from Mozart's Idomeneo and the world premiere of Elena Langer's trumpet concerto The Day the Sun Came Round for Tea, jointly commissioned by Pro Arte and its soloist, Benjamin Wright, and inspired by an absurdist poem in which a writer befriends the sun. Louise Farrenc's Symphony No. 2, by the 19th-century French composer and pianist, ends the season.
