Tavern Talk: A Growing Black Community: Life and Labor in West Somerville, 1900-1920

Maddie Short traces the Black community that lived for much of the 20th century just west of Davis Square. Inexpensive land and new homes drew Black migrants and immigrants from the American South, Nova Scotia and the West Indies, who settled alongside Italian immigrants. Short follows early families on Cameron Avenue, Elmwood Street and Harrison Street, in a tavern talk held at Aeronaut Brewing.

Kristen Gresh, Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs at the MFA Boston, leads a panel discussion with photographers on the range of their creative practices in Common Ground: Photography, Place, and Community. The exhibition, curated by Ivan Abarca-Torres, brings together 15 photographers who have made Somerville their home, with work ranging from documentary to conceptual on identity, community, gentrification and the urban landscape.

Fiori Musicali: Florid Treasures from Late Renaissance & Baroque Italy

Duo Maresienne, Carol Lewis on viola da gamba and Olav Chris Henriksen on theorbo and lute, plays Italian music of the late Renaissance and Baroque by Frescobaldi, Piccinini, Selma, Rogniono, Corelli and Fontanelli. The duo takes its name from the French composer and gambist Marin Marais, and the concert is the second in the museum’s Sunday-afternoon early-music series.

Recorder player Aldo Abreu joins Duo Maresienne, Carol Lewis on viola da gamba and Olav Chris Henriksen on theorbo and Baroque guitar, in music by Matteis, Finger, Paisible, Corelli and others. Matteis, Finger and Paisible were foreign-born musicians who made their careers in late-17th-century London, the city where paying public concerts first took hold, and Corelli's sonatas were widely played there.

Carol Lewis, the viola da gamba player of Duo Maresienne, plays solo viol music by Virgiliano, Sumarte, Ferrabosco, Hacquart, du Buisson, Sainte-Colombe and Marais. The title comes from Aurelio Virgiliano's Il Dolcimelo, an Italian treatise of about 1600 that includes ricercars for solo instruments, and the programme also takes in English viol music by Sumarte and Ferrabosco and the French school of Sainte-Colombe and Marais.

Countertenor and cornettist Michael Collver joins El Dorado Ensemble, the viol players Carol Lewis, Karen Burciaga, Mai-Lan Broekman, Thomas Conrad and Alice Mroszczyk with Olav Chris Henriksen on theorbo and Baroque lute, in cantatas, suites and canzonas by Schütz, Scheidt, Hammerschmidt, Reusner, Rosenmüller, Pezel and Heinrich Bach. Heinrich Bach, organist in Arnstadt for half a century, was Johann Sebastian's great-uncle.
