A Closer Look at Charley Longfellow's Japan Room

Charles Appleton Longfellow, the poet's eldest son, spent twenty months in Japan in the early 1870s and shipped home crates of art and objects. On his return he turned a room of the Brattle Street house over to them. This talk looks at what he collected and how he arranged it.

Two talks on the August 1900 performance of Longfellow’s Hiawatha, staged in Anishinaabe by members of the Garden River First Nation and attended by several Longfellow family members. Karl S. Hele, a Garden River member who directs Canadian and Indigenous Studies at Mount Allison University, sets out its context; Alan Corbiere, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History at York University, examines its use of the Anishinaabe language.
