Hiawatha Performances and the Garden River First Nation
Two talks on the August 1900 performance of Longfellow’s Hiawatha, staged in Anishinaabe by members of the Garden River First Nation and attended by several Longfellow family members. Karl S. Hele, a Garden River member who directs Canadian and Indigenous Studies at Mount Allison University, sets out its context; Alan Corbiere, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History at York University, examines its use of the Anishinaabe language.
