Geraldine Brooks discusses Memorial Days, her 2025 memoir of grief after the sudden death of her husband, the writer Tony Horwitz, with Rabbi Karen Thomashow of Temple Isaiah. Brooks won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for March; her other novels include Year of Wonders, People of the Book and Horse. It is a joint event of the Arlington, Bedford, Lexington and Lincoln public libraries and Temple Isaiah.

Weina Dai Randel discusses her novel The Lost Kingdom of Daughters, set in a matriarchal society based on China’s Moso people “where marriage doesn’t exist and free love is the tradition,” whose heroine meets two stranded American brothers. Randel wrote The Last Rose of Shanghai, optioned for film, and won the RWA RITA Award. Karen Kirsten, author of the National Jewish Book Award finalist Irena’s Gift, joins her.

Martin traces the history of chocolate from Mayan temples through the transatlantic slave trade and the rise of Hershey’s and Nestlé to labor on cocoa farms today, and asks how chocolate’s social goodness might be measured alongside its taste. Martin lectures in African and African American Studies at Harvard and founded the Institute for Cacao and Chocolate Research. A chocolate tasting follows.
