In Her Own Words: Music of Poetry, Poetry of Music

· &

Sat Oct 24 · 4pm, Emmanuel Church (Boston) / Sun Oct 25 · 4pm, Grace Episcopal Church (Newton)

Cappella Clausura, the Boston vocal ensemble devoted to music by women, sets texts by women authors beside the music women composers wrote in response, like annotations in a book’s margins. The programme includes works by Hildegard, Gitta Steiner, Rhona Clarke, Rhian Samuel and the ensemble’s founding director, Amelia LeClair. The Sunday performance moves to Grace Episcopal Church in Newton.

Magnificat for a Rose: Christmas with Cappella Clausura

· &

Sat Dec 12 · 6pm, Grace Episcopal Church (Newton) / Sun Dec 13 · 5pm, All Saints Ashmont (Dorchester)

Cappella Clausura’s Christmas programme sets two images of divine womanhood side by side: the rose of Angelus Silesius’s 1657 couplet, which “blooms because it blooms,” and the Magnificat, Mary’s song of the mighty cast down and the humble lifted up. The ensemble sings music by Erna Woll, Rebecca Clarke, Sulpitia Cesis and Yshani Perinpanayagam. The Sunday performance moves to All Saints Ashmont in Dorchester.

Fire and Ice: New Compositions Inspired by Vittoria Aleotti

· &

Sat Apr 10 · 4pm, Emmanuel Church (Boston) / Sun Apr 11 · 4pm, Grace Episcopal Church (Newton)

Following its first composition competition last season, Cappella Clausura premieres five new works by young composers, each inspired by the madrigals of Vittoria Aleotti, the Ferrarese composer whose Ghirlanda de madrigali appeared in 1593. Aleotti’s own madrigals frame the new pieces. The ensemble, devoted to music by women, won the 2017 Alice Parker/ASCAP Award for adventurous programming. The Sunday performance moves to Grace Episcopal Church in Newton.

Macrocosmos: Female Visionaries of Music and Art

· &

Sat May 8 · 4pm, Emmanuel Church (Boston) / Sun May 9 · 4pm, Grace Episcopal Church (Newton)

Cappella Clausura pairs music with paintings by women who saw the sublime at the largest and smallest scales: Hildegard of Bingen, whose cosmic visions fill both her paintings and her music, and the Canadian painter Emily Carr, whose journals Tawnie Olson set in Beloved of the Sky. Hilary Tann and Evelin Seppar are also on the programme. The Sunday performance moves to Grace Episcopal Church in Newton.
