The Election of 1876: A Forum with Daniel Breen
Daniel Breen, Professor of the Practice of Legal Studies at Brandeis, revisits the election of 1876, when Republican boards in Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana, alleging intimidation of Black voters, refused to certify returns favoring Samuel Tilden, and those states sent rival slates of electors. He traces the still-controversial settlement that made Rutherford B. Hayes president. Breen's book on Boston's public monuments is due in 2027.
