Coffee & Conversation: Séance and the Spiritualism Movement in Essex County
Historic Beverly opens this Coffee & Conversation with a mock séance built on nineteenth-century mediums' techniques, then reveals how its effects were made. The talk that follows traces Spiritualism in Beverly and Essex County, including séances and spirit photography, local stories and practitioners, and the blurry line between faith, entertainment and fraud in a movement that drew believers and skeptics alike.
