Tavern Talk: A Growing Black Community: Life and Labor in West Somerville, 1900-1920
Maddie Short traces the Black community that lived for much of the 20th century just west of Davis Square. Inexpensive land and new homes drew Black migrants and immigrants from the American South, Nova Scotia and the West Indies, who settled alongside Italian immigrants. Short follows early families on Cameron Avenue, Elmwood Street and Harrison Street, in a tavern talk held at Aeronaut Brewing.
