Transgender Imagining and the Danger of Normative Theory
Jade McGleughlin examines the dangers of normative psychoanalytic theories of gender applied to transgender and gender-nonconforming lives. Using Alessandra Lemma's writing on transgender adolescents and her case of “Jane,” she explores how open-minded inquiry can reproduce cisgender norms, and proposes a clinical stance of “genuine not-knowing.” McGleughlin, author of Clinical Storytelling, Art and the Problems of Being, is joined by discussant Francisco González and moderator Daniel Fishman.
