Faceless Blackness: A Psychoanalytic Investigation of Racism

· · · 1844 Commonwealth Avenue · · · ·

Drawing on Jacques Lacan and Frantz Fanon, Sheldon George reads American racial whiteness as a fantasy that “sutures symbolic and imaginary registers of experience.” Dennis Plant responds with Lacanian accounts of jouissance and repetition to examine how racism forms and endures, and Eben Lasker moderates. The panel aims to keep the theory accessible to newcomers to Lacan. Two CE credits are offered.

Using Alessandra Lemma's writing on transgender adolescents and her case of “Jane,” she explores how open-minded inquiry can reproduce cisgender norms, and proposes a clinical stance of “genuine not-knowing.” McGleughlin, author of Clinical Storytelling, Art and the Problems of Being, is joined by discussant Francisco González and moderator Daniel Fishman.
