Fall Lecture Series: A History of Jazz with Steve Bass

Steve Bass traces the history of jazz through Miles Davis, playing recordings from bebop, cool jazz, modal jazz and fusion to show how Davis and others reshaped the music, with live piano demonstrations of key improvisation concepts. Bass, artistic director of South Shore Conservatory, co-founded the Sinatra-inspired A Swingin Affair Big Band and wrote Swan Lake in Blue, a jazz ballet he produced in 2020.

Traci Griffith, racial justice program director at the ACLU of Massachusetts, and Marisol Santiago, policy and organizing director for MassVOTE, trace the history of the struggle for voting rights, the policy questions raised by a recent Supreme Court ruling, and what citizens can do to protect access to the ballot. Audience questions are taken in writing during the discussion.

David Marvuglio traces metal from its origins through its subgenres and subcultures, covering the pioneering artists and songs that shaped it and its wider cultural impact, in the third talk of the library’s fall music lecture series. Marvuglio, the bassist for Daath, created courses on metal, punk, hardcore and indie rock styles at Berklee College of Music and wrote Metal Bass Lines for Berklee Press.

Fred Springer, a Boston-based classical guitarist, has performed across the United States and in Argentina, Canada and Switzerland, and has won top prizes in international guitar, ensemble and mixed-instrument competitions. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin and Columbus State University, and teaches for the Kithara Project, which gives tuition-free classical guitar lessons to underserved young people, and at EKS Music School.
