Book Launch: Dog Circus Block Party

Jamaica Plain author Lori Lobenstine launches Dog Circus Block Party, the second Barking Puppy novel, in which Sophie and Juno, who write the Barking Puppy newspaper, take on a dog-hating new neighbor who wants the neighborhood more “upscale,” down to closing its school. Il Sung Na illustrates. The free family party adds face painting, balloon dogs, clowns and acrobats from Circus Up's Kirkos youth troupe.

Karl Stevens launches Pepper, the sequel to his graphic memoir Penny; he lives in Boston with his wife, Alex, and their cats Penny and Pepper. Stevens is an Ignatz Award nominee and Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist whose comics have run in The New Yorker and the Village Voice. Joel Christian Gill, chair of Boston University's MFA in Visual Narrative and author of the memoir Fights, joins him.

Poetry at Papercuts: Erika Meitner & Jenny Browne

Erika Meitner and Jenny Browne read from their new collections, Assembled Audience (Milkweed) and I Am Trying to Love the Whole World (BOA Editions). Meitner, who directs the MFA program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, won the 2018 National Jewish Book Award for Holy Moly Carry Me. Browne, a professor at Trinity University, was San Antonio's poet laureate and the 2017 Texas Poet Laureate.

Amra Brooks launches her memoir Mother Is a Place, published by Dopamine Books in September, in conversation with the poet Danielle Vogel. Brooks directs the Creative Writing Program at Stonehill College, where she curates the Raymo Literary Series, and wrote the novella California (2008). Vogel, author of four hybrid poetry collections including the lyric memoir A Library of Light, teaches at Wesleyan University.
