Talia Stroud, who directs the Center for Media Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, presents research on audience-facing uses of AI in news. One experiment found that rewriting articles for younger readers had little effect on evaluations or learning, though younger readers who detected more AI use engaged and learned less; two newsroom studies found both audience-guided and AI rewrites lowered perceived bias.

Jared McBride, a historian at UCLA, presents The Returns of Summer 1941: Perpetrators and Pogroms in Western Ukraine, on the violence against Jews that accompanied the German invasion of the Soviet Union that summer. Northeastern's history department and its College of Social Sciences and Humanities hold the series in memory of Jeffrey Burds, the university's late historian of Russia and the Soviet Union.

Wen-Ying Sylvia Chou, a health communication scholar who resigned from the National Institutes of Health in January 2026 after 18 years, reflects on the pressures on health misinformation research, including researchers' self-censorship and growing censorship at the NIH, and closes on research priorities such as countering major misinformation spreaders. Chou, a co-author of the Bethesda Declaration, is now a Harvard Shorenstein Center Fellow.

Peter Richardson of Northeastern presents No War, No Peace, No Incentives: Political, Economic & Strategic Inertia in Russian-Japanese Reconciliation in the Putin Era. Russia and Japan have never signed a treaty formally ending the Second World War, chiefly because of the dispute over the southern Kuril Islands. The history department and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities hold the series in memory of the late Professor Jeffrey Burds.

Jelena Golubović launches her first book, Inner Zone: The Untold Violence of Retribution in Besieged Sarajevo, which “unearths a buried history of retributive violence that unfolded inside besieged Sarajevo,” drawing on interviews with Bosnian Serb women whose suffering the dominant narrative of the war leaves out. She discusses victimhood, nationalism and contested histories of violence in conversation with Sasha Sabherwal. Copies sell at a 30 percent discount.

Fordham law professor Olivier Sylvain discusses his book Reclaiming the Internet: How Big Tech Took Control—and How We Can Take It Back, which traces today's online harms to thirty years of laissez-faire policy, including Section 230, and calls for “a new industrial tech policy that places consumers and communities at its center.” Sylvain advised the chair of the Federal Trade Commission from 2021 to 2023.
