String Quintet Masterpieces: The Magic of Viola Quintets

Mozart’s String Quintet No. 3 in C major, K. 515, and Brahms’s String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111, each with two violas. Violinists Peter Zazofsky, first violin of the Muir String Quartet, and Lucia Lin of the Boston Symphony join violists Wenting Kang, principal of Madrid’s Teatro Real orchestra, and Cara Pogossian, principal of the Portland Symphony, with the society’s artistic director Ronald Lowry on cello.

The Needham Concert Society's New Year's Eve showcase reprises its First Night concert, in which students share the stage with the society's professional guests in highlights from the chamber music and chamber orchestra repertoire. Founded in 1976 by former Boston Symphony principal trombone William Gibson, the society marks its fiftieth anniversary under artistic director Ronald Lowry, principal cellist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 70, No. 2, paired with Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65. Pianist Randall Hodgkinson, an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society who teaches at NEC, Wellesley and Longy, joins Romanian violinist Irina Muresanu of the University of Maryland faculty and cellist Ronald Lowry, the society’s artistic director and principal cellist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

Three clarinet trios spanning 125 years: Beethoven’s Op. 11, the “Gassenhauer”, Fauré’s Trio in D minor, Op. 120, and Brahms’s Trio in A minor, Op. 114. Clarinettist Robert Patterson, acting principal of the Modesto Symphony and a Boston University faculty member, plays with pianist Max Levinson, first-prize winner at the Dublin International Piano Competition, and the society’s artistic director, cellist Ronald Lowry.
