Opera composers come off the grand stage for chamber music: Verdi's rarely heard String Quartet, Respighi's Piano Quintet, a few arias with mezzo-soprano Kara Duga, and three two-minute commissions on Verdi's La Forza del Destino by Marti Epstein, Elena Ruehr and Elizabeth Brown. The players are violinists Sarita Kwok and Sammy Andonian, violist Stephanie Fong, cellist Hannah Collins, pianist Max Levinson and flutist Julie Scolnik, Mistral's artistic director.

Mistral Music's holiday concert is a program of Baroque concertos in which the ensemble's soloists take turns in the spotlight. Mistral, which marks its 30th anniversary this season, is directed by its founder, the flutist Julie Scolnik, author of the memoir Paris Blue.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings heads a Valentine's weekend programme that also includes the Cavatina from Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130, offered for the 200th anniversary of his death in 1827, and Amy Beach's quintet for flute and strings. The string players are violinists Sarita Kwok and Siwoo Kim, violists Danny Kim and Stephanie Fong, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan and bassist Tom van Dyck.

The ensemble includes violinists Sarita Kwok and Lucia Lin, violist Stephanie Fong, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, bassist Don Palma, clarinettist Graeme Steele Johnson, hornist Rachel Siders and percussionist Samuel Solomon.
