Steve Edson, a local documentary and fine art photographer, discusses Bizarroland, his first book, published by 89books in Palermo and drawn from a 30-plus-year project photographing flea markets, where “a cracked porcelain doll might sit beside a box of rusted wrenches.” He shows images from the book and new work toward a follow-up, and talks through hiring a book designer, finding a publisher and negotiating the deal.

Evan Mirapaul discusses his collection of photographs of violins, featured in the museum’s exhibition Common Time: American Musicality. The pictures range from anonymous portraits of players to work by Arnold Newman, Louis Faurer and Justine Kurland, and show the instrument as a marker of class, identity and aspiration. Mirapaul, a Pittsburgh collector, played orchestral and chamber music professionally until 2004 and co-chaired the International Center of Photography’s Library Committee.
