· · · ·

The third annual festival brings roughly 200 singers together, 150 of them students, for Jonathan Dove's The Passing of the Year, two pieces by Arianne Abela — I Love You Like a Rainbow and Because You Sang — and Franck's Psalm 150. Noah Horn conducts.

Production art for Chamber Series: America

Sun Nov 22 · 3:00pm

Chamber Series: America

· · · ·

A chamber programme tracing American folk music and art song across 250 years, sung by members of the choir as soloists rather than as a full chorus. Allison Voth directs the series, which the group stages in smaller rooms than its main concerts.

Production art for Cantata Christmas: Bach Magnificat

Sat Dec 12 · 7:30pm

Cantata Christmas: Bach Magnificat

· · · ·

Bach's Magnificat anchors the evening — he wrote it for his first Christmas as Leipzig's music director, in 1723 — alongside other seasonal pieces and a section the audience is invited to sing with the choir. Noah Horn conducts. St Paul's Parish in Harvard Square is the room.

Production art for Faure Requiem

Sun Feb 28

Faure Requiem

· · · ·

Cantata Singers and music director Noah Horn perform Fauré’s Requiem, composed between 1887 and 1890, which leaves out most of the Dies irae that dominates other settings of the mass for the dead and pares back the orchestra to put the voices forward; the chorus calls the result “almost prayer-like.” The rest of the programme is unannounced, though the concert runs about an hour and 45 minutes with an intermission.

Production art for Chamber Series: Great Britain

Sun Mar 21 · 3:00pm

Chamber Series: Great Britain

· · · ·

The second of the season's chamber programmes turns to the folk and art song of Great Britain, past and present, sung by members of the choir as soloists in a smaller room than the main series uses. Allison Voth directs.

Production art for Haydn Creation

Sun May 2 · 3:00pm

Haydn Creation

· · · · ·

Haydn's Creation, given with full orchestra and chorus. He wrote it after hearing Handel's oratorios in London, and it opens with an orchestral Representation of Chaos before the chorus arrives at the first light. Noah Horn conducts. Almost every number is a picture of something — light, storm, birds, the first animals.
