French Adventures: From Fairy Tales to the Sea

Méhul's First Symphony opens a French programme completed by Ravel's Ma Mère l'Oye, the fairy-tale suite he first wrote as a piano duet for two children, and Debussy's La mer. Méhul was a leading opera composer of the Revolutionary years whose symphonies went largely unplayed for a century afterwards.

Emilie Mayer's Faust Overture opens — Mayer wrote eight symphonies in nineteenth-century Berlin and went largely unplayed for a century afterwards — followed by Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Two performances, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Mayer studied with Carl Loewe and had her works played across Germany in her lifetime.

A world premiere by Cooper is paired with Saint-Saëns's First Cello Concerto, which runs its three sections together as one continuous movement, and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. The Brookline Symphony, founded in the 1950s and revived in 2010 after a hiatus, is made up of volunteer amateur, student and professional players under music director Andrew Altenbach.

The Brookline Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra of volunteer amateur, student and professional players led by music director Andrew Altenbach, closes its season with a summer pops concert. Last June's pops programme mixed selections from Wicked, Encanto, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Toy Story with Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain and a movement of Gounod's Petite Symphonie.
