The Story of Babar Concert

Billed as “Nature Unbound: Music Inspired by the Great Outdoors,” the concert centres on Poulenc’s The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant, his setting of Jean de Brunhoff’s picture book for narrator and piano, with Jim Crowley of the English department narrating and Deborah Nemko of the music department at the piano. Also on the programme are Sibelius’s The Pines, Rachmaninoff’s Lilacs and Gershwin’s Promenade (Walking the Dog).

Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel follows Orlando, a young nobleman at the court of Elizabeth I who lives on for more than three centuries, wakes one morning as a woman, and carries on into the twentieth century. Ruhl, a MacArthur Fellow, was twice a Pulitzer finalist, for The Clean House and In the Next Room.

Wind Ensemble Concert

Bridgewater State University’s Wind Ensemble, directed by Donald Running, plays a programme of large-ensemble pieces by several composers. The group’s repertoire spans classic and contemporary wind-band literature, from standards by Holst, Grainger, Sousa and Alfred Reed to local, regional and world premieres, and its concerts often feature faculty and students as soloists. Admission is free, with no tickets required.

Bridgewater State University’s Chorale, directed by Bradford Dumont, sings a mix of classical and contemporary pieces. Open to anyone in the university community, the Chorale is the larger choir from which the auditioned, largely a cappella Chamber Singers are drawn, and the university’s choral forces have recently sung Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and Fauré’s Requiem. Admission is free, with no tickets required.

A two-day festival led by Bridgewater State’s Social Justice Choir of Southeastern New England, joined by singers from UMass Dartmouth and the wider community in what the university calls “music with a message.” The choir rehearses and performs music that carries a message of social justice, including repertoire by underrepresented composers, and takes part in non-musical projects that benefit the communities it shares. Admission is free.

BSU Dance's annual winter concert, billed as a celebration of "life, art, and dance," brings together choreography by faculty members, guest artists and the department's advanced students.
