The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra plays Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila overture, Stravinsky's Petrushka and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. The BPYO draws its players from across greater Boston and gives its subscription concerts in Symphony Hall, on the same stage as the senior orchestra.

Mahler's Second Symphony, the Resurrection, fills the programme on its own — it needs a full orchestra, a chorus and two vocal soloists, and runs about ninety minutes. It closes the Youth Orchestra's season and the Boston Philharmonic organisation's final year, its forty-eighth.
