Vaughan Williams's early C minor Piano Quintet, withdrawn in his lifetime and unpublished for decades, joins Mozart's E-flat Piano Quartet, K. 493 and Mendelssohn's Second String Quintet, Op. 87, written two years before his death. Alfred Einstein called the Mozart finale's melody "the purest, most childlike and godlike" ever sung.

Beethoven's first published work, the E-flat Piano Trio, Op. 1 No. 1, opens a programme that takes in Dvořák's Terzetto for two violins and viola, Op. 74 and closes with the B minor Clarinet Quintet Brahms wrote late, which the Society describes as wrapping the listener in an autumnal atmosphere.

Wolf's Italian Serenade, a quartet miniature built on an old Italian tune, opens; Mendelssohn's D minor Piano Trio, Op. 49 follows; and Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence closes, a string sextet whose slow movement he wrote during a stay in Italy.

A new work by Charles Shadle, commissioned by the Society and drawing on scenes and themes from his Choctaw Nation background, sits between Schumann's Märchenerzählungen — lyrical miniatures that suggest childhood stories without telling any of them — and Dvořák's G major String Quintet, Op. 77.

Mozart's Oboe Quartet, K. 370 and Mendelssohn's Piano Sextet, written when he was fifteen, precede Bartók's Contrasts — commissioned by Benny Goodman through Joseph Szigeti — and Guillaume Connesson's 1998 Sextet for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, double bass and piano.
