Boston Baroque's chamber ensemble spans four centuries of Italian music — Vivaldi, Albinoni, Castello and Handel beside rarities by Maria Teresa Agnesi and Antonio Archilei — with Grammy-winning soprano Amanda Forsythe and gambist Cristiano Contadin. Colin Jacobsen's new Morgantina Studies closes the evening.

Boston Baroque gave the city's first complete period-instrument Messiah in 1981, and its Grammy-nominated reading has been a holiday fixture since. Christoph Koncz conducts this year's two Jordan Hall performances, with soloists Liv Redpath, Sun-Ly Pierce, Eric Ferring and Benjamin Appl singing Handel's oratorio of hope.

Boston Baroque's annual New Year's concerts, Marc Minkowski's first as music director, open the worldwide bicentennial of Beethoven's death with an all-Beethoven program at Sanders Theatre. Minkowski's debut at last year's edition ended with an ABBA encore that brought the hall to its feet.

Marc Minkowski pairs two solo Bach cantatas with Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, the setting of Mary's grief at the crucifixion that the composer finished in the final months of his life, at twenty-six. Soprano Maya Kherani and countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen are the soloists, one night each at Jordan Hall and Sanders.

Two landmark English operas of the 1680s on one bill: John Blow's Venus and Adonis, in which Venus loses her mortal lover Adonis to a boar hunt, and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, which ends in Dido's celebrated lament. Blow's work is thought to have shaped Purcell's. Boston Baroque plays on period instruments under Lionel Meunier.
