ChemE Dept. Seminar: Dissipative Self-Assembly of Colloidal Suspensions in Microgravity
Eric M. Furst, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Delaware, describes experiments run in the Microgravity Science Glovebox on the International Space Station, where magnetic colloids assemble in three dimensions without sedimenting. Across 96 test points the suspensions formed six structural regimes, among them a gel-like network, sheets, ribbons and a spiky phase. He closes with reflections on three ISS campaigns over two decades.
