Sylvia Lavin, "Architecture After Fire"
Sylvia Lavin gives the Carl M. Sapers Ethics in Practice Lecture, arguing that American architectural modernism was inseparable from the forest, not for its timber but for its use of trees as information systems and as metaphor, and tracking the white pine through deforestation, wildfire and the Chicago school. Lavin, interim dean of Princeton's School of Architecture, is completing Arboreal Media and the Making of American Architecture.
