Come and Go (2003)
Monteiro’s Come and Go (2003), his last film, made as he fought a fatal illness, casts the director himself as João Vuvu, an eccentric libertine drifting through a sunlit Lisbon and trading erotic, linguistic and theological debates with the women he meets. It closes the Archive’s series João César Monteiro, Poet-Provocateur, preceded by his 1969 debut, a short documentary portrait of the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
