The Conductor (1980)

In Andrzej Wajda's 1980 film, John Gielgud plays Jan Lasocki, a Polish émigré famous as a conductor in New York, whose return after decades abroad unsettles a provincial orchestra, its conductor (Andrzej Seweryn) and a violinist (Krystyna Janda). A work of Poland's “cinema of moral concern,” its struggle over who leads the orchestra was widely read as a picture of Polish politics. Ingmar Bergman counted it a favourite.
