Through the Transparent Darkness: Transcendentalism, Art, and Imagination in the Anthropocene
Christopher Volpe, a New Hampshire artist, writer and educator, sets Emerson, Fuller and Thoreau beside Henry Corbin, Albert Camus, Donna Haraway, Owen Barfield and Simone Weil, asking whether Transcendentalism can help reanimate the humanities and renew a bond with a planet being devastated on an industrial scale. Volpe's paintings are held by the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Smith College, and he was Harvard Divinity School's inaugural artist-in-residence.
