How Divinity Scholars Found the Human in the Humanities
Ulrike Wagner traces how professional scholarship and public literary criticism shaped each other across the Atlantic, from Emerson's "Literary Ethics" (1838) to Nietzsche's "We Philologists" (1875), and how translation, conversation and teaching tied philology to religion, liberal education and women's intellectual authority. Wagner directs the German Studies Program at Bard College Berlin and recently completed Transcendental Philology: Emerson, Fuller, Nietzsche, and the Migrations of a Method.
