Derbyshire, 1809: the thirteen-year-old Lady Thomasina Coverly proposes a scientific theory whose implications she cannot yet grasp, while her tutor conducts several affairs. Stoppard runs 1809 and the present day in the same room, and lets the modern scholars get almost everything wrong.
