Kwan Kew Lai: Finding Independence in America
Local author Kwan Kew Lai discusses Finding Independence in America: An International Student’s Journey from Malaysia to Medical School, a memoir spanning 17 years of her path from international student to American citizen. Without sustained family support, she relied on scholarships, loans and ingenuity while “navigating a cultural landscape of racism, sexism, and unfamiliar social cultures,” and took her medical expertise into global humanitarian work.
