Yang Tan Collective, Brain-Body Center Seminar: Sung-Yon Kim, Seoul National University
Sung-Yon Kim of Seoul National University takes up “How does drinking rapidly quench thirst?”, since drinking satisfies thirst within seconds, long before the water can restore the body’s fluid balance. The work identifies the mechanical sensation of swallowing, carried by PIEZO2 in pharyngeal sensory neurons, as the signal, and traces a pharynx-to-forebrain circuit that passes rapid, drinking-paced swallows while filtering out the slower rhythm of eating.
