The Radical Duke and the American Revolution

Boston Book Festival · Boston Public Library · Central Library — Guastavino · 700 Boylston St · Boston · Back Bay · Boston

Danielle Allen discusses Radical Duke: How One Aristocrat—and the American Revolution—Transformed Britain, about Charles Lennox, the Third Duke of Richmond, whose covert alliance with Thomas Paine helped stoke rebellion across Britain and the Atlantic. The book grew out of a parchment of the Declaration of Independence found in Sussex. Allen, a political philosopher, is a professor at Harvard; Boston Public Library president David Leonard leads the conversation.
