MIT.nano Seminar: Mark Allen on Magnetics in MEMS
Mark Allen, chair of electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, surveys magnetic materials in microelectromechanical systems: laminated iron-alloy cores that suppress eddy currents in compact power converters, permanent-magnet circuits that tune yttrium iron garnet filters in the gigahertz range with zero DC power, and a magnetic optical relay that shuts converters off during a fault. Allen co-founded Cardiomems and belongs to the National Academy of Engineering.
