The World in Between: Javier Urcid on the Ancient Roots of Día de los Muertos
Javier Urcid, an anthropological archaeologist who chairs the Latin American and Latino Studies Program at Brandeis University, draws on decades of research in Oaxaca to trace the ancestral practices behind Día de los Muertos and how Indigenous and European traditions came together in the celebration. His work on Mesoamerican mortuary practices includes burial series curated at Harvard’s Peabody Museum. The afternoon combines a talk and a workshop.
