Sondheim's waltz-time musical, after Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night: Desiree Armfeldt, an actress whose career and love affairs are both fading, spots an old lover, Fredrik Egerman, in the audience of a provincial town, seated beside his teenage wife. It contains "Send in the Clowns."
