The first of four programmes traversing Tchaikovsky's complete symphonies pairs the earliest with the last: the First, Winter Daydreams, written at twenty-six, and the Sixth, the Pathétique, whose premiere he conducted days before his death and which fades to silence rather than a climax. Andris Nelsons conducts.
