Begotten (1991), E. Elias Merhige's wordless black-and-white creation myth, follows God Killing Himself, Mother Earth and her son, Flesh on Bone, through death, torture and burial until the ground flowers. Shot on 16mm and painstakingly re-photographed, it found its audience through festivals, VHS copies and champions such as Susan Sontag, who screened it in her living room. Shown in a new 4K restoration as a Late Show.
