Mat Fournier: Undoing Gender in French Literature
Mat Fournier presents his book Dysphoric Modernism, which questions “the entanglements of the modern gender binary with state power and colonial history.” Reading Gide, Genet, Colette and others, Fournier traces how narratives of sexual dissidence in the French modernist canon both deconstruct and reinforce exclusive definitions of masculinity and femininity, and argues that tracking that dysphoria shows gender's complicity with historical and contemporary fascisms.
