The Devils (1971)

· · ·

Ken Russell’s 1971 film stars Oliver Reed as Urbain Grandier, a worldly priest in 1634 France who becomes the target of witchcraft accusations from a sexually obsessed nun (Vanessa Redgrave), which corrupt officials of church and state are glad to exploit. Russell drew on Aldous Huxley’s The Devils of Loudun and John Whiting’s play. This is the uncut director’s cut, restored and presented in 4K for the first time.
