The Motive and the Cue
Jack Thorne's play goes inside the 1964 rehearsals for John Gielgud's experimental Broadway Hamlet, with Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, in the title role, as two ages of theatre collide and the partnership between actor and director threatens to unravel. Sam Mendes directs Mark Gatiss as Gielgud, Johnny Flynn as Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor. It won the Evening Standard award for best new play.
