The Awful Truth (1937)
In Leo McCarey’s The Awful Truth (1937), Jerry and Lucy Warriner (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) head for an “amicable” divorce amid jealousy, with custody of their terrier, Mr. Smith, to settle, then set about sabotaging each other’s romances. The screening marks the centenary of the Brookline philosopher Stanley Cavell, who ended his book Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage with a long study of the film.
