Anesthesia, Addiction, and Asylums: The Private Life of Dr. Freeman Allen
Gibson House Museum curator Hailey Robbins lectures on Dr. Freeman Allen, Massachusetts General Hospital's first staff anesthetist and husband of Mary Ethel Gibson. A prominent Boston doctor, Allen struggled privately with morphine addiction and spent his last years in and out of mental health facilities, with Ethel as his confidant and support. The lecture carries a content warning for discussion of mental illness, opiate addiction, alcoholism, suicide and grief.
