New on View: Community and Self-Representation in the David and Jane Shapiro Collection
Leah Yeshitila, former Hao Family Intern in Modern and Contemporary Art, discusses her installation of late 20th-century Black artists, drawn from David and Jane Shapiro's gift to the museums. Its layered pictures of Black men centre community, interiority and the rituals of everyday life, in settings from D9 collegiate fraternities to barber shops, as an alternative to media images of trauma in Black life.
