Janis Thiessen, professor of history at the University of Winnipeg, takes as her starting point Sugar Farmers of Manitoba, a 1968 institutional history published by the Manitoba Beet Growers Association that gives inadvertent and disturbing insight into racism and settler colonialism in Canada. Her talk is a step toward a fuller history of sugar in the province. Mary Jane McCallum, Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard, chairs.
