Muslim Transnationalism in Modern China: Debates on Hui Identity and Islamic Reform
Z. Hale Eroğlu, assistant professor of history at Boğaziçi University, discusses her book Muslim Transnationalism in Modern China, a portrait of “under recognized reformists who aimed to turn Muslim subjects into active Chinese citizens and revive ‘true’ Islam.” Drawing on Republican and early Communist-era journals, Chinese translations of Islamic sources, memoirs and travelogues, she traces how Hui intellectuals adapted currents from Egypt, Britain, India, Turkey and the Soviet Union.
