Physical Math Seminar: Nicolas Romeo (University of Chicago)
Nicolas Romeo of the University of Chicago presents “Mechanical canalization of chiral morphogenesis,” a theory-experiment study of how the fruit fly midgut reliably coils with the same handedness. An early constriction biases the symmetry breaking, with handedness set by molecular cues relayed between organs; elongation under anatomical confinement then drives a buckling instability that amplifies and stabilises the coil, pointing to tissue mechanics as a source of developmental robustness.
