Daughter of Darkness (1948)
In Lance Comfort’s Daughter of Darkness (1948), Emmy Baudine, a disturbed woman who works for an Irish village priest, claws open the face of a carnival boxer who expects sexual favours and is packed off to a Yorkshire farm, where the carnival and the vengeful boxer follow. The Archive likens the morbid melodrama to Buñuel’s Mexican films. It screens on 35mm in Great Expectations: British Postwar Cinema, 1945–1960.
