Exploring the Expansion of Philosophical Colleges within and beyond Central Tibet
Gray Tuttle, Leila Hadley Luce Professor of Modern Tibetan Studies at Columbia University, traces how Tibetan Buddhist philosophical monastic colleges spread within and beyond Central Tibet, through networks of mother and branch monasteries tied by founding lamas, shared textbooks and residential houses. There were more than 430 such colleges in Tibetan areas, many others in Mongol regions and a few in Manchu-ruled China, at Beijing and Chengde.
